In vSphere 6.5, a new GuestOS type has been introduced called vmkernel65 which is optimized for running ESXi 6.5 in a VM as shown in the screenshot below. As you can see from the VM Virtual Hardware configuration screen below, both the PVSCSI and VMXNET3 adapter are now the recommended default when creating a Nested ESXi VM for running ESXi 6.5. Luckily, the process to force ESXi to generate new certificates is straight forward. Start by logging into the ESXi CLI shell as a root user, then change to the /etc/vmware/ssl directory, which will have contents similar to those shown below. Next I am using Windows 10 inbuilt ssh client to connect to esxi server, you can use putty or other your choice of tool. Running below command prompts for password to connect esxi server. Ssh root@192.168.34.25. All the esxi certificate stored under location /etc/vmware/ssl, and certificate names are rui.key and rui.crt, I will just rename it.
vSphere 6.5 has been released and as known from previous versions, VMware provides a free version of their Hypervisor ESXi for everyone again. The license key can be created for free at VMwares website. It has no expiration date. The binaries you will receive as 'Free Hypervisor' are 100% identical to the paid version.

- Login or create an account
- Register for ESXi (Enter some personal information)
After registration, you will receive a unique license key and access to the binaries. If you already have an ESXi 6.0 license key, you don't need to sign up for a new key. - Download VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.5 - Binaries
- Install ESXi to your Hardware (Create a Bootable ESXi Installer USB Flash Drive)
- Login as root with the Embedded Host Client (https://<ESX>/ui/)
- Navigate to Manage -> Licensing
- Click Assign license and enter your license key
